Curriculum Intent
Physical education at Sir Graham Balfour School aims to inspire all students to succeed in all forms sport and physical activities. It provides opportunities for all to take part in a range of different sports that will build resilience, embed sportsmanship, develop communication skills, enhance teamwork skills, and ensure students develop a love for sport and physical activity that promotes lifelong learning and enjoyment. Throughout the lessons students will use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in competitive situations, develop techniques to improve performance, understand the importance of fitness and the effect it has on the human body, clearly linking this to leading a healthy lifestyle. Students will also be given the opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities. Alongside the practical element of the subject, students will also learn important theory elements that will promote healthy lifestyles, for example, learning about what makes a healthy diet and how the human body works. All students will study core PE in key stages 3 and 4 with the option of taking GCSE PE and A level PE. GCSE PE and A level PE develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance. Students will understand how physiological and psychological states affect performance, have the opportunity to develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance and understand the contribution which physical activity makes to health and fitness.
